Russia is going to help Syria relaunch its oil & gas industry which has been devastated by years of conflict, Alexander Novak, Energy Minister of Russia, said on February 13, 2018.
We have signed a roadmap, not only in the power industry but also oil and gas industry, covering the recovery of oil fields and the development of new ones, Alexander Novak said. He did not say anything about Russian companies that may be involved.
A deal was signed last week on the construction of new energy facilities and rehabilitation and modernization of old ones in Syria, according to the Russian energy ministry’s website.
Novak said that restoring the economy of Syria was very important for Russia, especially the oil and gas industry which would undoubtedly contribute to the normalization of the economic and social situation in Syria.
A Russian business and political delegation visited Syria in December 2017 to discuss investments and reconstruction, including oil and gas projects, with Bashar Assad.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin who led the delegation said that Syria was a land of unlimited riches. Russian companies have the moral right to develop large-scale economic projects in this country, Rogozin added.
